A Level + Engineering Pathway

Are you an aspiring engineer? If you are planning to study engineering at university, whether chemical, mechanical or civil, make sure your qualification gets you to the right University. That's why we have introduced A Level +, so students get a greater choice.

As part of this course you will study BTEC Diploma in Engineering and A-Level Maths.

Engineers are currently in real demand across a number of different industries - from defence and telecommunications to aviation and mechanics. If you like solving problems and thinking creatively, we offer a variety of courses that will help open up a range of exciting career opportunities to you. Engineers have the biggest impact on the world over any other profession, they work to come up with solutions to global warming, machines for diagnosing serious medical conditions, and better transport systems. If you want to make a difference in the world, engineering is for you.

  • Entry Requirements


    All of our 'A Level +' courses require a minimum of 5 x GCSE's at 4 or above, including a grade 7 in Mathematics, and a grade 5 in English Language and Science.

  • Course Content


    Mathematics In the first year you will cover topics such as Pure Maths, Statistics and Mechanics. In Pure Maths you will study a wide range of topics including differentiation and trigonometry. In Statistics you will learn about sampling and probability and hypothesis testing, and in Mechanics you will learn about kinematics (displacement, velocity and acceleration).

    In the second year you will develop your mathematical problem-solving skills and algebraic skills further and you will study the Pure Maths topics in greater depth. In Statistics you will learn about probability distributions and in Mechanics you will learn about moments and friction.

    BTEC Diploma in Engineering The course has been designed as a two-year programme of study, enabling learners to develop a substantial common core of knowledge in the first year, including Health and Safety in the Engineering Workplace, Engineering Principles, Product Design & Manufacture, Electrical Machines and Computer Aided Design.

    The majority of our students progress to universities where they study a wide variety of degrees.

    For those students not wishing to progress to university, comprehensive support is provided to help you find alternatives such as employment or apprenticeships.

    There are lots of opportunities available to you to progress across the South Thames Colleges Group and into the world beyond education.
