Key Facts

A Level + Architecture Pathway

Architecture is the art and science of designing and engineering large structures and buildings. Those who choose to study architecture will have enthusiasm for both Maths and the arts, and architecture admissions requirements typically consider both artistic ability and mathematical proficiency.

As part of this course you will study BTEC Art and Design (3D Design) AND A level Maths

The disciplines of Architecture and Mathematics are considered to have a close relationship, predominantly because of the importance of geometry in architectural design. This is why A Level + at Kingston combines both disciplines to ensure our students get the best start in their careers.

This pathway will provide an insight into an architectural career and is filled with many trips and useful work placements for our learners.

  • Entry Requirements

All the A Levels require general criteria with a minimum of; 5 x GCSEs at grade 4 or above, including English grade 5 and Mathematics grade 7

Each A Level has specialised criteria which you will also need to achieve at a minimum: Mathematics; Grade 7 in GCSE Maths

  • Course Content

Mathematics In the first year you will cover topics in Pure Maths, Statistics and Mechanics. In Pure Maths you will study a wide range of topics including differentiation and trigonometry. In Statistics you will learn about sampling and probability and hypothesis testing, and in Mechanics you will learn about kinematics (displacement, velocity and acceleration). In the second year you will develop your mathematical problem-solving skills and algebraic skills further and you will study the Pure Maths topics in greater depth. In Statistics you will learn about probability distributions and in Mechanics you will learn about moments and friction.

BTEC Art and Design (3D Design) This course in 3D Design covers a wide range of different design areas and disciplines, ranging from small scale to Human scale through to Large scale design. Examples of small scale design is anything 3 dimensional relating to hands interacting with a product. Human scale is designing for a human interacting with a product, this could be furniture or a vehicle. Large scale design is where lots of people use a space. This could be an interior space, restaurant, exhibition space or a building. The course gives students the opportunity to explore all these specialisms whilst learning how to research, produce initial ideas, develop ideas in 2D and 3D Maquette's through to realising final outcomes as models and CAD visuals and animations. Students will learn skills in appreciating the work of other designers to inform their own ideas, problem solving, technical skill, professional practice in a workshop environment and communication.

  • Progression Next Steps

The majority of our students progress to universities where they study a wide variety of degrees.

For those students not wishing to progress to university, comprehensive support is provided to help them find alternatives such as employment or apprenticeships.

There are lots of opportunities available to you to progress across the South Thames Colleges Group and into the world beyond education.

During your time with us you will have access to a dedicated team of careers and education advisers who will help you as you take the next steps towards achieving your goals.
