BTEC Level 1 Introduction to Vocational Studies (Business, Travel & Hospitality, or Esports)

On this course you will develop the skills you need to build a career including teamwork, innovation and entrepreneurship, and you will also have the opportunity to explore your chosen subject in more detail. As part of the qualification, you have the option to specialise in Business and IT, Travel & Hospitality or Esports.

In addition to this, students will also study either GCSE or Functional Skills English and Mathematics depending on their grades.

  • Entry Requirements


    We will invite you to a Meet the Tutor event where you will receive information, advice, and guidance about the course you have applied for. This will be an opportunity for you to gain valuable information about the course and give you the opportunity to ask any questions you may have.

    You will provide a copy of your last school report and / or a reference from an employer or relevant professional other. This is to ensure we can support you to be able to achieve well on the course.

    3 x GCSEs at any grade including Maths and English or previous vocational qualification.

  • Course Content


    The course is made up of ten units, four core units (Being Organised and Developing a Personal Progression Plan), and three optional units. You will study different optional units depending on your specialism.

    Throughout the course you will learn a variety of topics based on the subject specialism of your choice. You will have the opportunity to visit real businesses and to hear from industry experts. You will meet with your personal tutor for group meetings and for one to one meetings on a regular basis.

    During the course students are supported in developing their English and Mathematics skills and the course provides the opportunity to either re-sit both GCSE Mathematics and English or study these as Functional skills.

    Students will also have the opportunity to undertake a period of work placement.

  • Progression Next Steps


    The course provides progression routes into work, apprenticeship or further study at level 2. The course will help develop your employability skills including team work, communication and numeracy skills and provide an insight into a variety of topics such as Exploring a Local Tourist Attraction and Creating a Spreadsheet to Solve Problems as well as practical gaming.

    There are lots of opportunities available to you to progress across the South Thames Colleges Group and into the world beyond education.

  • Additional Information


    We expect you to improve your English and Mathematics during this year. This course allows you the opportunity to re-sit both Functional skills or GCSE Mathematics and English.

    Guest speakers are invited in to talk to students as part of the college's Inspiring Future's programme and provide insights into various careers as well as how to start your own business. There is also the potential to undertake a work experience placement during the course.

    The course is currently 100% coursework and you will be assessed in a variety of ways, presentations, role plays and time-limited exercises.
