L3 - BTEC National Extended Certificate in Engineering - (Year 1 of 2 of the National/Extended Diploma)

If you like solving problems and thinking creatively, we offer a variety of courses that will help open up a range of exciting career opportunities to you. Engineers have the biggest impact on the world over any other profession, they work to come up with solutions to global warming, machines for diagnosing serious medical conditions, and better transport systems that we use every day. If you want to make a difference in the world, engineering is for you.

Working in this industry you can expect to have a varied job role. As an engineer your day to day will never be the same twice. You will find that one day you might be out helping in the build of something, whereas the next you could be in front of a computer developing ideas and programmes. You will never be bored working as an engineer!

  • Entry Requirements


    We will invite you to a Meet the Tutor event where you will receive information, advice, and guidance about the course you have applied for. This will be an opportunity for you to gain valuable information about the course and give you the opportunity to ask any questions you may have.

    You will provide a copy of your last school report and / or a reference from an employer or relevant professional, this will include attendance. This is to ensure we can support you to be able to achieve well on the course. Applicants with 85% or below attendance will have been deemed not to have met this criteria. All applicants are given an opportunity to discuss any evidence- based mitigating circumstances that may have affected the reference / school report.

    5 x GCSE's at grade C/4 or above including English Language, Maths and Science. Maths or Science must be grade B/5. Alternatively a BTEC Level 2 in Engineering (overall Grade Merit) with Merits in the Mathematics and Science units, and GCSE grade C/4 in both English Language and Mathematics.

  • Course Content


    The course has been designed as a full two-year programme of study, enabling learners to develop a substantial common core of knowledge in the first year, including Health and Safety in the Engineering Workplace, Engineering Principles, Product Design & Manufacture, Electrical Machines and Computer Aided Design.

    In year two you will progress to either the general engineering pathway, where you will study a range of topics such as Micro-controller Systems, Mechanical Systems or Electrical Systems. You will also complete a specialist engineering project.

  • Progression Next Steps


    The majority of our students progress to universities where they study a wide variety of degrees including Aeronautical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering and Aviation and Airport Management.

    Others progress on to the HNC/HND programmes offered by the college in General, Mechanical and Electrical Engineering.

    For those students not wishing to progress to university, comprehensive support is provided to help them find alternatives such as employment or apprenticeships with blue chip companies. We have very close relationships with our employers and many of our students have progressed onto apprenticeships with employers such as British Airways, CBRE and Treadlighter (solar panels).

    There are lots of opportunities available to you to progress across the South Thames Colleges Group and into the world beyond education.

  • Course Structure


    This is a two year course. You will have the opportunity to complete either the BTEC Diploma or Extended Diploma in Engineering, depending on your year one grades.

  • Assessment Details


    BTEC Nationals are assessed using a combination of internal assessments, which are set and marked by teachers, and external assessments which are set and marked by Pearson. You will complete two external assessments in year one and a further external assessment in year two.
