L3 - Access to Higher Education Diploma: Mental Health and Wellbeing

An alternative route to University or Higher Education for students aged 19+ who have been out of education for at least a year.

The Access to Higher Education Diploma- Mental health and Wellbeing is designed to give adult students, who may have left school early or have been out of education for a number of years, the opportunity to develop academic skills, confidence and knowledge before applying to university. This course requires a minimum of 90% attendance and the successful completion of 45 Level 3 credits and 15 Level 3 credits.

This is an intensive course of study and requires a high level of commitment, including several hours of self-study in your own time. Daytime study is approximately 12 hours delivered over two to three days per week in college 2024-2025.

The Access to HE Diplomas at Kingston College are nationally recognised qualifications and are awarded by The Open College Network London Region (OCNLR).

  • Entry Requirements


    All students are expected to have English Language GCSE grade-C/4 OR the equivalent (not functional skills level-2) before partaking on the course. If you do not have GCSE Maths at grade C/4 you may be given the opportunity to study this alongside your Access programme to achieve a grade 4 or above.

    We will invite you to a Meet the Tutor event where you will receive information, advice, and guidance about the course you have applied for. This will be an opportunity for you to gain valuable information about the course and give you the opportunity to ask any questions you may have.

    You will provide a reference from an employer or relevant professional other. This is to ensure we can support you to be able to achieve well on the course.

  • Course Content


    The core subjects for Mental Health and Wellbeing are Health Studies, Mental Health and Psychology.

    The remainder of the programme will comprise of study skills which are designed to provide students with essential skills underpinning learning on the course and in undergraduate study for example note-taking, research methodologies and report-writing skills.

    This course requires excellent time management, maturity of approach and a high level of commitment throughout the year.

    Students will be supported in their studies and UCAS application through a weekly tutorial session.

  • Progression Next Steps


    Students who successfully achieve the Access Diploma are then eligible to apply for a degree within the Health and Social care field.

    One year, part time (September start), typically two -three days a week in college.

    The Access to HE Diploma in Mental Health and Wellbeing is new this year due to high demand and applicants are advised to apply early to secure a place. Please be aware that if you do not meet Home Student Residency status, you will be charged at the higher - level fee. You may be eligible for help with fees and/or childcare, depending on your circumstances.

    If you are age 19 or over you may qualify for a student loan that will pay for your tuition fees. This loan will not need to be repaid if you progress onto Higher Education and complete an eligible higher education qualification.
