Course intro If you are in year 11 or 12 and are looking to take the next steps towards your career behind the scenes of stage and screen, then this course is for you. This vocational course combines industry practice and creative skills. You will study in our in-house Theatre and TV Studios, using our external hire and employer links to prepare for successful career progression. Media, Film and Photography are just few of the elements required to put together a staged production. This course looks at each of these and more, helping you develop skills that are transferable from an arena sized concert or a theatrical production all the way to small scale touring venue. This course looks into the alternative side of the industry; business and people management alongside the more obvious aspects of the course such as stage management, theatre design, construction and operations. We will teach you a wide range of skills required to successfully and skilfully put on stage/screen productions. From learning how to design and construct costumes to managing the wardrobe backstage on a live audience event or production. There will be no shortage of hands-on experience on this course. You will work as a crew member in Kingston College's in-house theatre, gaining an understanding of design, operative and management roles and responsibilities.   • Entry Requirements


    We will invite you to a Meet the Tutor event where you will receive information, advice, and guidance about the course you have applied for. This will be an opportunity for you to gain valuable information about the course and give you the opportunity to ask any questions you may have.

    You will provide a copy of your last school report and / or a reference from an employer or relevant professional other this will include attendance. This is to ensure we can support to be able to achieve well on the course. Applicants with 85% or below attendance will have been deemed not to have met this criteria. All applicants are given an opportunity to discuss any evidence based mitigating circumstances that may have affected the reference / school report.

    4 x GCSE's at C/4 or above, or a Level 2 Certificate / Extended Certificate or above (at merit or above) in a relevant subject.

    You will have gained either English and/or maths at GCSE C/4 or above, or a L2 Functional skills in either English and/or maths.

  • Course Content


    Production Arts Skills Development - This makes up the main part of your qualification. You will develop skills in all aspects of technical theatre and stage management as a backstage theatre crew member. You will be assessed on how you apply these skills in responding to a brief and how you carry out production roles. You will submit a practical portfolio to evidence your work. Our theatre hosts a vast range of both internal and external productions, gigs, fashion shows, exhibitions, musical theatre/dance production/plays etc. all of which you will get to work on, gaining valuable industry experience and transferable skills. The Production Arts Industry - This module is all about working in the Production Arts industry that you will have learned through your work in class and your own research. You will submit written/audio or video reports, debriefs or presentations to demonstrate your knowledge in preparing for work in this ever-evolving and exciting sector. Personal Production Arts Profile - Continuing from the first year of study, you will continue to develop your skills building your personal portfolio that will not only evidence your work for grading, but also extend into your professional self-promotion. As theatre crew, you will be continually exposed to external hirers/agencies, performance companies and professional contacts that come into the theatre. You will develop useful networking and employability skills to support your progression into the industry. Collaborative Project - You will apply the skills and knowledge developed overtime to take on a leadership role in your specialist area. You will work with others to produce an industry standard product/production/event demonstrating a professional level of skills in preparation for future employment.

  • Progression Next Steps


    Most learners will progress onto the Extended Diploma in Production Arts Practice. This qualification offers learners the opportunity to develop their performance and technical skills through a process of self-evaluation, practice and review which supports them as they start to build their personal portfolio in preparation for entry to employment or higher education. In addition to the production arts sector-specific content outlined above, the requirements of the qualification will mean that learners develop the transferable and higher-order skills that are highly regarded by higher education and employers, for example communication skills, team working, personal practice and reflection. This course has outstanding progression data in regards to students that go on to work in the industry. This qualification carries UCAS point and is recognised by higher education providers. Learners can progress to higher education degree programmes, such as:

    • HNC/D Performing Arts (Technical Theatre and Production Management)

  • Additional Information


    The BTEC National Foundation Diploma in Production Arts Practice course is a full time one year course. If you choose to continue onto a second-year pathway you will achieve a full Level 3 National Extended Diploma in Production Arts Practice which is equivalent to three A Levels.

    There are opportunities for theatre visits/trips/workshops throughout the year and we invite in professional practitioners to inspire and give industry advice. There is considerable emphasis on group work and collaboration, so all students are expected to be committed to the group and to the discipline of rehearsal and production. Due to the nature of the industry, learners may be required to work on productions outside of regular college hours.
