L3 BTEC  Applied Science

We need paramedics, engineers, chemists and scientists and this a great route into science and health careers. In your first year you will study the Foundation Diploma in Applied Science which is a practical course that is equivalent to one and a half A Levels. Upon successful completion of your first year, you will be able to progress to the 2nd year to study Diploma in Applied Science. Upon completion of the course, you will gain a qualification accepted by universities that is equivalent to three A Levels.

  • Entry Requirements


    We will invite you to a Meet the Tutor event where you will receive information, advice, and guidance about the course you have applied for. This will be an opportunity for you to gain valuable information about the course and give you the opportunity to ask any questions you may have.

    You will need to provide a copy of your last school report and / or a reference from an employer or relevant professional other this will include attendance. This is to ensure we can support you to be able to achieve well on the course. Applicants with 85% or below attendance will have been deemed not to have met this criteria. All applicants are given an opportunity to discuss any evidence- based mitigating circumstances that may have affected the reference / school report.

    For admission on to the Extended Certificate pathway with A level Maths

    5 x GCSE's at C/4 or above (including Combined Science and/or additional Science), or a Level 2 Certificate / Extended Certificate or above, at Merit or above, in a relevant subject. You will have gained English Language at GCSE 4/C or above or L2 Functional skills. A grade 7 in Maths is required to undertake A Level Maths.

  • Course Content


    The course is taught in units and will develop a wide range of knowledge and practical skills in physics, chemistry and biology. Learners will also gain knowledge on health and safety issues when working in a laboratory. In addition, learners will gain employability skills as they are required to complete 5 days working experience.

    In the second year, learners will have the opportunity to study further units to achieve the L3 Diploma in Applied Science.

  • Progression Next Steps


    The majority of our students progress to universities where they study a wide variety of degrees including Biomedical Science, Pharmaceutical Science and Biological Life Sciences.

    For those students not wishing to progress to university, comprehensive support is provided to help them find alternatives such as employment or apprenticeships. In the past, students have progressed onto employment as laboratory technicians.

  • Course Structure


    Extended Diplomas are delivered as two one year programmes:

    Year 1 - Extended Certificate

    Year 2 - Diploma

    Students are expected to satisfactorily complete the Extended Certificate programme prior to being considered appropriate for a year 2 qualification.

  • Assessment Details


    Assessment will be by assignments, presentations, observation of practical work and practical lab written reports. There will also be externally assessed units which will be a mixture of timed exams and timed set tasks depending on the units
