A Level + Education Pathway

The Education pathway has been designed to contain complementary subjects to either work in primary education or within selected secondary subjects of the further education sector. You will have a variety of work-based opportunities including undertaking placements within local schools. You will also be able to gain additional qualifications in essential areas such as safeguarding and Fundamental British Values.

As part of this course you will study BTEC Extended Certificate in Applied Psychology AND 2 A Levels (English Language & Literature and Sociology)

Choose from a selection of subjects to help start your career in teaching. The mandatory qualification (BTEC Extended Certificate in Psychology) will give students a base level understanding of the human mind (which is essential in the understanding of a young person's needs). This pathway allows you to develop the skills and experiences to progress on to a career in education. We have experts from teacher training courses to help you prepare for your future and help you secure your place at university. As part of the course, we will also take you to local universities and involve you in enrichment activities linked to your pathway including various trips into London and overseas trip. All these experiences will enable you to be successful in your application to teacher training.

  • Entry Requirements


    All the A Levels require general criteria with a minimum of; 5 x GCSEs at grade 6 or above, including English Language and Mathematics.

  • Course Content


    Extended Certificate in Applied Psychology You will learn about theories of psychology, what makes us think and behave the way we do, and how we can research this. The course is one year (equivalent to half an A-level) and has UCAS point attached to it. It is suitable to study alongside other A-level subjects.

    English Language & Literature Over the 2 years, you will study: modern poetry as well as older poetry such as Chaucer's The Wife of Bath; you will learn to compare the writing styles and themes of two novels, Frankenstein by Mary Shelley and The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood; you will study drama: Twelfth Night by Shakespeare and A Streetcar Named Desire by Tennessee Williams; finally you will study a specialist subject for the coursework in which you will compare two texts, which may be from any genre.

    Sociology Over the 2 years you will study a range of core topics, including education, methods in context, research methods. You will then students some of the following topics: culture and identity, families and households, health, work, poverty and welfare.

    The majority of our students progress to universities where they study a wide variety of degrees.

    For those students not wishing to progress to university, comprehensive support is provided to help them find alternatives such as employment or Apprenticeships.

    There are lots of opportunities available to you to progress across the South Thames Colleges Group and into the world beyond education.
