Congratulations to Skills for Work and Life student, Rachel Gilder, who was awarded her certificate after completing her Independent Travel Training.
Rachel, 21, is currently on the Living Independently Course and started her training in October 2011 with Val Nimoni, an Independent Travel Trainer, from the Croydon Employment and Training Centre. The travel scheme was introduced by the Skills for Work and Life department at Carshalton College and the learning support staff and enrichment staff work closely with parents and carers in training learners to become independent travellers. After an initial assessment with Rachel’s parents in her home environment and at College, Rachel started her training.
One day a week, every Thursday, Val would meet Rachel at her home to accompany on the bus and walking journey to and from College using the 157, 250 and 198 bus routes. Gradually Rachel learnt where to start her journey and leave the bus to arrive at College. The training then progressed to Val meeting Rachel at the bus stop, leaving the directions up to Rachel and checking she was being safe as a pedestrian to show she was capable of making the journey independently.
Rachel is proud of her new skill and always arrives early to College. Val and Rachel’s tutors surprised Rachel during her class on Wednesday 23 May to present her with a certificate of achievement.
The training is invaluable to students in building their confidence, opening up opportunities and creating a stepping stone to work. All new journeys that learners need to take are learnt through the same process to make sure they are confident with each different route.
