Undiscovered Talent Spotted

Three BTEC Music Technology students from Carshalton College will hear their music on TV after Specsavers selected it as backing to their latest advertisement.

Second year students, BM, Sona and Mellie, known collectively as DRT, had their track Get Mad Now! chosen for the new Specsavers nationwide advertising campaign, first viewing to be aired on 20 June.

The opportunity occurred when the Specsavers production team contacted the College looking for extras for their latest advert. During filming, Sona heard the music that would possibly be selected and asked the Director to listen to his own music as an alternative. The director was impressed and Get Mad Now! was selected as the backing music.

BM, Sona and Mellie, aged 18 to 19, met when they joined Carshalton College and will graduate this Summer after three years studying Music Technology.

The BTEC National Diploma in Music Technology teaches students how to use technology in the music industry. Martin Smith, Curriculum Manager said the best selling point of the course is the professional standard equipment and the industry practitioners who teach at the College

“The students are taught all elements of music production, how to use a recording studio and about the music business by people who work as producers, writers and DJs. We are really proud of DRT’s achievement, they are very talented and make fantastic music. Being confident and believing in their music has enabled them to grab hold of this opportunity.”

In addition to DRT’s soundtrack, five students from Carshalton College appeared in the advert as extras. DRT were helped by tutor Jay Relf and have a Digital Distribution Deal with New State Entertainment making their song Get Mad Now! available to download from iTunes. The group have formed their own record label Get Mad Records and already have an albums worth of music near completion, which they hope to release late summer, while two members of DRT start music related courses at University in September.
