Making a Difference
It is not just students at Carshalton College who are looking to realise their ambitions. Tutor Natasha Kinloch from the BTEC Public Services courses, will be receiving qualifications and acknowledgement this Summer after completing a BSc Degree in Policing, including receiving a 1st for her dissertation to be presented to the British Criminology Society annual conference.
Natasha, aged 27, joined the College in January 2010 and has been helping to enhance the courses on offer by providing extra knowledge for the students to tap into. Natasha left the British Transport Police working as a Communication Officer to move into teaching.
The Public Service Courses are a popular choice by providing a step to progress onto applying to work in the services. Carshalton College has a team of specialist industry tutors preparing students for careers in the police, fire, ambulance and armed services.
Natasha’s focus has been to increase the importance of engaging in academia as services such as the Police take this knowledge seriously when looking at applications and ongoing career development. She will be transferring the knowledge learnt from her degree teaching new units being introduced in September including Forensic Studies, Police Powers and Criminal Justice, Management and Investigation of Incidents and Crime and its Effects on Society. It will also help with research method modules.
The climax to completing her course will be presenting her dissertation to the British Criminology Society. Natasha submitted the paper on the off chance it might be selected and she will now be presenting her work as a research paper at the British Criminology Annual Conference being held in Leicester in July.
Titled Who’s Watching Who? Gated Community: A Failed Solution to 21st Century Crime Control, her paper looked at restricted areas and the advantages and disadvantages of fencing communities in. Natasha also hopes the research will feature in The British Journal of Criminology after an academic peer review of her research paper.
Natasha is now turning her spare time to completing a teacher training course and then a Masters in Criminology.
“Ultimately I want to help the College to be the first thought of students looking to go into the Public Services. As tutors you want to introduce new programmes, develop the curriculum and offer in depth knowledge for the students to leave fully prepared and gain the knowledge and skills to be accepted onto highly competitive high potential schemes. The College provides the teaching knowledge and expertise to prepare students for the public services.”
