Description of the Course

This is specialist games development programme with a strong design core. The programme has been developed in conjunction with a leading games development company. It is nationally recognised by employers and universities, and is equivalent to 3 full A Levels.

Course content

The course covers all the major elements in the extremely complex process that is the development of an IT-based game. These are:
  • Games platforms and technologies
  • Digital graphics
  • 3D design, including modelling and environments
  • Audio and video for games
  • The narrative structure of games
  • Working in the games industry and professional practice
  • Concept art.

Students work on a professional brief, and will also create a final project, the production of a game level.

The course is based in our specialist games, media and music area. Students have access to state of the art industry-standard hardware and software on which to create their work.

Assessment

Most of the course is continuously assessed. Some units may be externally assessed by exam. For coursework, students must produce written reports, evaluating their performance and show evidence of planning, research and organisation.

Who is the course for?

The course is aimed at those who are looking to develop the many and complex skills required for a career in the games industry.

Entry requirements

An average of Grade C for 4 or more GCSEs including English Language, or successful completion of a Level 2 vocational programme at Merit Level, plus a literacy programme at Level 2.
