Description of the Course
This level 1 qualification covers the basic technical needs for today's motor vehicle repair industry. It provides essential knowledge for service technicians working on light vehicles (cars and vans) in all types of garages, dealerships and maintenance depots. It is a learning programme which involves students studying both the theory and practical aspects of the following:
- Light vehicle construction and routine maintenance
- Operating principles of light vehicle engines, tyres, brakes, steering and suspension systems
- Operating principles an maintenance of light vehicle transmission systems and electrical and electronic systems.
Students also gain a broad knowledge and understanding of health and safety in the workplace and other skills associated with working in a garage.

Who is the course for?
The course is suitable for school leavers interested in becoming a Motor Vehicle Technician.
Entry requirements
Grade E in maths and english GCSE or a science based subject or working toward Level 1 in Literacy and Numeracy. Alternatively you will have successfully completed an entry level 3 qualification. You will also be asked to demonstrate your commitment and skills in an interview.
What can I do after this course?
IMI Level 2 Certificate in Maintenance and Repair if entry requirements are met.
