Introduction to Legal Interpreting

This hybrid course is for prospective and practicing interpreters who are interested in working in the legal sector. It includes two online sessions to introduce note-taking (a memory aid used by professional interpreters to retrieve information efficiently when interpreting consecutively), a court visit in central London, and an online session of role-play practice.

  • Course Content


    04/06/24 - Session 1 (remote learning) General introduction to the note-taking systems and techniques with some suggested general symbols. 11/06/24 - Session 2 (remote learning) Students will be introduced to some suggested symbols for legal terms and will practise note-taking. Students will also be encouraged to develop the symbols and the system that best work for them. 18/06/24 - Session 3 (London, in person) Court Visit: Students will visit a court in central London with their tutor and will observe proceedings. They will learn about the courtroom and officials, and take down notes about cases. 25/06/24 - Session 4 (remote learning) Role-play practice: students will interpret consecutively a legal role-play from and into English.
