Level 3 Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools

Build on your skills learnt at Level 2 and develop your capacity to deal with a variety of familiar and unfamiliar situations in the classroom, using a range of professional skills.

  • Entry Requirements


    You need a Level 2 qualification in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools or another closely related Level 2 qualification. Before you enrol you need to arrange to do at least twelve hours a week of paid/voluntary teaching support for the duration of your course. Your placement can be in a primary, secondary, or special needs school of your choice. Nursery schools are not suitable. You'll need a DBS check to start your placement. You should arrange this with your placement school.You can apply and be interviewed before your placement is arranged but you must bring proof of your placement confirmation to enrolment.

  • Course Content


    The Level 3 Diploma consists of 15 units of work, including: communication and professional relationships with children, young people and adults; promote children's and young people's positive behaviour; promote equality, diversity and inclusion in work with children and young people; schools as organisations; support assessment for learning; support children and young people's health and safety; support learning activities; understand child and young person development.

    We also run a series of short NCFE qualifications within the course to help support your development and provide additional evidence of your competence to support in schools.

  • Progression Next Steps


    If you don't want to go directly into working in a classroom, you could move on to a foundation degree in teaching.

  • Course Structure


    Students attend college for 3 hours per week throughout the academic year and, again, build portfolios through regular submission of written assignments. Each unit of study requires experience in the classroom, allowing students to apply theory to practice and to discuss placement experiences whilst at college.

  • Assessment Details


    The course is assessed by a portfolio of evidence. You'll also be visited by an assessor to observe you supporting learning in the workplace.

    You'll be able to show that you can carry out self-directed activities under guidance and may have limited responsibility for directing the work of others. You'll be able to apply knowledge and skills in a range of complex areas. The course is based on the national occupational standards for supporting teaching and learning in schools.
