"Definitely study what you enjoy doing and be yourself. I can’t stress this enough. What matters is that you believe in the possibility of making your dreams come true." LEIA ROMHI, ART AND DESIGN STUDENT
BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Art & Design - Photography
Awarded: Triple Distinction* (D*D*D*), the equivalent of 3 A*s at A Level
Chloe studied BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Photography at Kingston College and previously attended school in Spain. She is now studying a BA (Hons) Fashion Media and Promotion at University of the Creative Arts.
“I don’t think I would have been capable to achieve such high grades if not for my tutors, especially Photography lecturer, Estelle Vincent, who pushed me to work as hard as I could. Throughout this experience I found what I really enjoy doing, and I also found myself. It also led me to the course I am now undertaking but most of all it showed me how I needed to stand out and share my ideas. The course itself is really flexible and unique, it lets you create anything and it fulfils your desires for your future career.”
“I think attending the Foundation Degree (FdA) Art & Design is one of the best decisions I have made in many years.
“Initially I was apprehensive of returning to studies through lack of confidence and minimal skills, I needn't have worried. The team of tutors guided me through each module and were there to help me at any stage if required. Not only are they adept with their teaching skills, but they also fully involve themselves with the students, continuously raising our confidence. As a result of this, I feel that I have produced work of a very high standard and that my knowledge of Art & Design has increased dramatically.”
I am very fortunate to have met so many lovely people. It never occurred to me that I would have such an enjoyable and proactive experience. Such as meeting the incredible artist, living in Germany, who worked with Walt Disney on a few classic featured films. I was invited to train with her on hand-drawn animation as part of my work experience. Thanks to Kingston College for encouraging and giving me the valuable experience that I needed to get started.
My tutors were my absolute heroes. My English tutor is the reason why I obtained a grade 5 in GCSE English. I will never forget that day when I opened up my result. I give my huge thanks to my brilliant tutor, Jodie Barker. I never thought in a million years I’d say this but I actually miss my English lessons!
“I joined this course with little to no experience with drawing or design but had an interest in both. The course provided me with opportunities to learn different techniques and methods that helped me understand the key principles of 3D design.
“Throughout the course I have learned how to use markers and make models, which I found challenging, but my tutors and lecturers were constantly pushing me, which helped me reach my goal of Distinction star.
“I am optimistic for the future because I know the skills I have learned in this course will heavily aid me in university and give me the skills necessary within the field of architecture.”
Photography - Level 3
Rebecca decided to come to STCG following an open day. She found the facilities were perfect for what she wanted.
Rebecca said, “I really enjoyed my time at the college, I found that it was very welcoming. I met many new friends at college who I keep in contact with. I gained a lot of knowledge about many different aspects of photography including editing and concepts to projects. My time at CWA has boosted my confidence and has allowed me to understand all different aspects of photography.”
Since leaving college, Rebecca has worked alongside the charity Headway, working with people with prosopagnosia, a condition that can develop following a brain injury. People with the condition have difficulty recognising the difference between faces. Rebecca commented, “I hope my photographs can help build awareness and get people talking about the condition”.
"Completing the BA (Hons) Art and Design has opened new ventures for me to explore. After a long break in my career, I felt that returning to a profession was rather impossible. My course helped me restore my self-confidence. I started the course without any prior background in art and design and was unsure of how to accomplish it. But a well-designed course, tightly-knitted group, and individual mentoring enabled me to quickly adjust to my new professional course."
